Since the majority of us are stuck at home, everyone is coming up with new ways to connect, and this especially true for parents dealing with kids. Our children miss their playmates, and many of them are trying to adapt to their new normal. It is also hard for them to understand why they can’t go to visit friends or to the park. And with this challenge, parents are trying to figure out how do they celebrate those special occasions: Birthdays.
Here are a couple of technology sources to help enable a virtual birthday party:
Marco Polo: Marco Polo allows you to leave videos for others to see within a group setting. The great thing about this app is that it allows you leave a video for someone to see later but it does not have to be in real time. Therefore it makes it easier to communicate since you do not have to schedule a time for everyone to participate. We have been using this video for my younger son who is a toddler. The kids love it, and they have a great time watching their friends. It can also be downloaded for free.
Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate your child’s birthday:
Have a Dance Party on Zoom or if you have younger children or a child that might be more introverted or younger, you can use the Marco Polo app. The app allows a parent to create group, and parents can video their child showing their latest dance moves to their favorite music. Everyone included in the group can view at their leisure.
Celebrate with a science party on zoom. Send an invite along with the ingredients for the fun science experiment to do together. Then the kids can do the science experiment together on zoom. Find science projects you can do at home here.
Have an art party on zoom or Marco Polo or even just email. Everyone can share their artwork. The children can create their own masterpieces or send out a copy of an illustration for them to color or paint. Download free coloring page here. There are additional coloring pages here.
